In stark contrast to Rep Kathleen Willis' resolution against them, the senator promotes the Second Amendment

Countering Representative Kathleen Willis' anti-gun bill (HR 1197) that denounces Gun Owner Sanctuary Counties, gubernatorial candidate Sam McCann for the Conservative Party on Tuesday introduced a Senate resolution supporting the 40 Illinois counties that adopted loose resolutions declaring themselves as "gun owner sanctuaries," which oppose gun control laws that they believe are unconstitutional.

The resolution states, "...we express our support for these counties and their decision to provide sanctuary for their citizens who wish to exercise their fundamental right under the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the State of Illinois."

McCann then issued the following statement:

"The word “sanctuary” has been misused by liberals in recent years to fool the public into accepting the lawless and dangerous abdication of basic public safety practices. A sanctuary is a place where people can go to feel safe, and in the true spirit of the word, we should support sanctuaries that protect citizens’ rights to protect themselves and their families.

With this resolution, Senators can show our support for local governments and citizens who are unwilling to let their unalienable rights be abused. I call upon all of my colleagues in the Senate to support this resolution so that Illinois can begin to remind America what a sanctuary really is."
